A Healthy Liver Through Detoxification

A healthy liver can be achieved through detoxification. Juice fasting is a way to "fast-track" liver detox.

The results can be wondrous!

Fasting is often used as a liver detoxification method. It is one of the quickest ways to increase elimination of toxins and enhance the healing process of the liver, and the body.

Be aware that caution must be used when fasting. If you are diabetic, your blood sugar levels could drop too low causing a diabetic coma. If you have hypoglycemia or other chronic health problems fasting may not be best for you.

Do not fast on water alone as this could cause you to feel worse instead of better.

Also, be cautious if you have a long history of exposure to fat-soluble toxins like pesticides or if your liver, and your body, is particularly overloaded with toxins. The reason is that, during a fast, stored toxins in the fat cells are released into your system. This could cause some serious problems.

Please consult your physician before going on any unsupervised fast or strict detoxification program.

One thing to consider when you decide to do a liver cleansing fast is to choose a time when you can relax while fasting.

How many days should you fast? I recommend three days. Anything over that should probably be supervised by a physician.

A live, or fresh, juice fast is your best way to go. This will remove toxins from the liver and promote healing by supplying the liver and blood with some vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

I have experienced the three day fast. The first day was "challenging", but the next two were much easier. The thing that surprised me when I fasted the first time was that my tongue turned really dark!

If that happens to you, don't worry, it's normal to get a coated tongue. The important thing is that after the fast....

I felt amazingly well!

If you would like to try juice fasting, you will need a juicer. If you don't have a juicer, or don't want to purchase one, just follow the instructions, but substitute a fruit or some raw veggies for the juice. A good fruit juice substitute would be apples. Watermelon is also a good choice.

Juicers are great tools for your detoxification program, and an excellent investment in your health. Keep in mind that there are actually three types of juicers:

  • The Masticating Juicer: These are the best, but they are more expensive. If money is no object, this is definitely the way to go. One of the best choices is the Hurom Slow Juicer.
  • Centrifugal Juice Extractor: These will juice veggies and fruits and are lower in price than the masticating juicers. The problem is finding the best quality. The prices range dramatically. The Breville Die-Cast Juice Fountain Elite Juicer is super fast and high quality, but doesn't cost much less than some of the masticating juicers.
  • Electric Citrus Juicers: Just as it says, these are perfect if you are going to stick with mainly citrus fruits and they aren't expensive. The Cuisinart Citrus Juicer, Brushed Stainless is just right for those small jobs, and inexpensive.

You decide what's best for you and your budget.

Liver Detoxification: Fasting for a Healthy Liver

  • To prepare for your fast you should eat only raw fruits and vegetables for a day or two. Salads are good.

    This will make the fast less of a shock to your system.

  • Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water (distilled is good) each day, plus pure fresh juices, and, if you like, up to two cups of herbal tea per day.
  • Dilute your juices with distilled water, adding about one part water to three parts juice. Do not add sweeteners and don't use any processed juice, only fresh.
  • The best juice is lemon juice for liver cleansing. Fresh apple and grape are also very good. Orange or tomato could cause discomfort so try to avoid those two.

  • Vegetable juices and green juices are also good choices. Raw cabbage juice is particularly good for your liver and digestive system. Just be sure to drink the cabbage juice as soon as it is prepared so it doesn't lose its vitamin content.
  • Some herbal tea choices that rejuvenate the liver are alfalfa, burdock, chamomile (unless you are allergic to ragweed), dandelion, milk thistle, red clover, and rose hips.
  • A high quality multivitamin/mineral is recommended. You can also consider adding a pure, high quality vitamin C or grapeseed extract, and milk thistle (silymarin) to support the liver.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise during the fast. Try to rest and let your body direct its energy to cleansing the liver.
  • Once you have completed your fast you should reintroduce solid foods gradually. Limit portions and definitely do not overeat. Stick with raw foods the first couple of days and go slow.

During a fast, as the toxins are released, you may experience fatigue; body odor; skin eruptions; headaches; dizziness; irritability; anxiety; confusion; nausea; coughing; diarrhea; dark urine; dark, foul-smelling stools; body aches; insomnia; and even cold or sinus symptoms.

But don't panic, because you may experience very few symptoms.

Any symptoms you feel will pass. You may consider using an enema with lemon juice to cleanse the colon and alleviate some of these symptoms.

There are many positive benefits to a liver-cleansing, fresh juice fast:

Once you have completed your fast and feel the positive effects you may consider a one day fast each week to keep that liver running smoothly. Pay attention to your body and determine what's best for you.

I would recommend a three day fast at least every spring and fall, but really anytime you are feeling a low period in your health and energy.....it would be a time to consider fasting.
